"BOWIE. John Boye, alias Bowy, alias Boee, a Scotsman living at Yarmouth, had letters of denisation in England, 1481 (Bain, rv, 1471). John Bowey had remission for holding Dumbarton Castle against the king, 1489 (APS., xn, p. 34; Lennox, n, p. 132). Mariot Bowy appears in Edinburgh, c. 1523 (Soltre, E. 265), and Andrew Bowye was notary pubc in Scone, 1570 (Scon, p. 212). Hieronomy or Jerome Bowie or Bowy appears as master of the king's wine cellar, 1585-89 (RFC., rv, p. 24; ER., xxn, p. 31), and two years later William Bowie is mentioned as servitor in Edinburgh (Laing, 1212). William Bowie was notary in Lauder, 1606 (RRM., m, p. 370), and Elizabet Boway was charged with being a disorderly person (i.e. non-conforming) in the parish of Carsfern, 1684 (RFC., 3. ser. n, p. 578). William Bowie was member of Gartly Company of Volunteers, 1798, and another William Bowie member of Drumblade Company, 1804 (Witt). The name is very common in the Commissariot Records of Stirling and Dunblane in seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Bowie of Keithock bear a Sagittarius as crest, but this is merely canting heraldry. Cf. BOB. (2) See under Bum. BUIE, BOWIE. From the Gaelic adjective buidhe "yellow (or fair) haired.' In Argyllshire curtailed forms of MACILBOWIE, q.v. Bowie was and still is a common name in Jura, and there was a small sept of the name in South Uist. The Bowies of Strathspey are counted followers of the Grants. Mathow Bouie, free burgess brouster in Inverness, 1614 (Rec. Inc., n, ?. 123). James Buie in Nether Auchinrivock, 670 (Campsie). John Buy and Donald Buy appear in the Inverness Stent Roll, 1671 (More Cuttoden papers, i, p. 183, 185), and Alexander Buj in Portclare is in record, 1679 (IDR., p. 91).
