"BUCHAN. Of local origin from the district of the name in Aberdeenshire. Ricardus de Buchan was clerk of the bishopric of Aberdeen c. 1207-08 (RAA., i, p. 138), and William de Buchan held land in Aberdeen in 1281 (REA., n, p. 278). Thomas de Boghan of Edinburghshire rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears an eight-rayed figure and S" Thomae de Bvcan (Bain, n, p. 208, 553). Malcolm and Patrick de Buchane were tenants of the Douglas in the barony of Morton in 1376 (RHM., i, p. Ivi). Walter de Bochane or Bucchan, canon of St. Magnus cathedral in 1369 appears as archdeacon of Shetland in 1391 (Diplomatarium Noneglcum, i, p. 404; n, p. 402; RMS., i, 824). Richard of Bughwan, a Scot, was illegally arrested at Lowestoff in 1405 (Bain, rv, 690), William de Buchane was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1436, Thomas and William Bughan in 1477 (NSCM., i, p. 4, 26), and Duncan Buchane was burgess of Abberbrothoc in 1458 (RAA., n, 115). The Buchans of Auchmacoy (Logie-Buchan parish) were one of the principal families of the name. Andrew Buchan of Achmakwy was on the assize for settling the boundaries between the lands of St. Peter's Hospital in Old Aberdeen and the neighboring property of the Cottoun in 1446 (REA., i, p. 245).
