"BUIST. A surname of Fife origin, and confined mainly to the shire. Ernaud and Roger Boiste (or Buiste) are said to occur in Normandy, 1198 (Mem. Soc. Ant. Norm., 15-17), but this is not a probable source of our name. Harrison's etymology (after Jamieson, Scot. Diet.) seems to me unlikely. A writer in Weekly Scotsman says first record of the name is Peter Buste at Auchtermuchty, 1360, but gives no reference. It may be connected with Bois and BOYCE, q.v. Laurence Boyst was member of assize at Cupar in 1521 and Andro Boyst is mentioned there in same year (SCBF., p. 192, 222). Cristine Bust, spouse of Andrew Bouman of Vtherogall, is mentioned in 1584 (Soltre, p. 153). John Boast was a suspect papist in 1589 (Scottish Papers, x, p. 855), and David Boisk is recorded in Carnbenny, 1620 (Dunblane). Five of the name, spelled Boist, are in Dunblane Commissariot Record in seventeenth century. Janet Boyst appears in Sherreiftoun, parish of Scone, 1687 (St. Andrews Cfl.), and John Boost in Friertoun, 1697 (Dunkeld). "(The surnames of Scotland. George Fraser Black, 1866-1948)
Sometimes you can run into a brick wall in your tree and you just don't have enough evidence to make that next step back in time. A DNA test can sometimes help to make a link to a particular family name if you find you share common DNA with people who have the same or similar surnames as each other. If you are lucky then you may get a match within a few generations and discover some Buist ancestors. Additionally, the modern DNA test can give you a breakdown of your ethnic mix - you may be surprised at the results!

Birth, Death and Marriage records are often the best method of making the links to the Buist Genealogy that will form part of your family tree. Although records vary from country to country, they are normally the most formal record of a person's relations. From the sources listed below it will be possible to locate a birth record and, from that record, a birth certificate may be obtainable which is likely to list the names of the parents, therefore taking you back another generation. A marriage certificate may also list the names of the respective fathers of the bride and groom which may then help you to find them earlier in life on a census record enabling you to fill out more detail in the Buist family tree.
