"CHAMPAGNE. From Champagne, an ancient government of France. The name was also Latinized de Campania in early charters. Pieres de Chaumpaigne, rector of the church of Kynkel, who rendered homage in 1296 is probably the Pieres de Chaumpaigne of Fifeshire who is recorded as rendering fealty at the same time (Bain, n, p. 194, 204). Rauf de Chaumpayne and William de Champaigne, both or the county of Wyggetone, also rendered homage in the same year (ibid., p. 184, 206). In 1306-07 Huwe de Champane, a tenant in capite of the king of England, petitioned for 'mitigacioun' of the relief for his lands in Galloway "according to their present value, not the old valuation before the Scottish war, as they have been so wasted thereby, that otherwise he must sell them" (ibid., n, 1984). He appears to have died at this time as very soon after the daughter of Hugh de Chaumpaigne, deceased, was given in marriage in 1306-07, to Dungal MacDouyl, junior in Galloway (ibid., 1905). John Champenay in 1343 had a gift of one hundred shillings from the king (ER., i, p. 535-536), and Johannes Champnay had a remission for his share in burning the toun of Dunbertane in 1489 (APS., xn, p. 34; Lennox, n, p. 132).
