"CHAPEL. From residence at or office in a chapel, Anglo-French chapele, Old French capele, Church Latin capella. The office of usher of the king's chapel, that is, Chancery, was hereditary in a family called from the office de Capella, and was attached to a third part of the lands of Craigmillar (Thomson, The Public records of Scotland, p. 68). In 1328 there is entry of wages of die boys of William de Capella (ER., i, p. 118). John de Capella possessed Craigmillar after the Craigmillars, and in 1374 the lands were purchased from them again by Sir Simon Preston (Dickson, Ruined castles of Midlothian, 1894, p. 69). Little is known of this John de Capella. John Chapell held a tenement in Ayr, 1502 (Ayr, p. 97). "(The surnames of Scotland. George Fraser Black, 1866-1948)
