George Clapartoun who appears as subdean of the Chapel Royal of Stirling in 1546 was probably Sir George Clappertoun or Clapertoun who appears between 1558 and 1573 as Provost of trie College of Holy Trinity, Edinburgh (Soltre, p. 222, 225). Mr. John Clapperton of Neatoune appears in 1655 (Lander), and Edward Clawpirton in Dinrod in 1688 (Kirkcudbright). Hugh Clapperton (1788-1827), the African explorer, was born at Annan, Dumfriesshire.
