"COLT. There was a barony of Colt or Cult in Perthshire from which the name may have come. William Culte de Strathawen, Lanarkshire, took the oath of fealty, 1296. John Colti held land in barony of Lust airy k before 1365 (RMS., i, 200), Thomas Colt is mentioned in Perth, 1446 (RAA., n, 362), and John Colt was one of the tenants of Moneydie, 1483. James Colt and Andro Colt appear as witnesses in Perth, 1547 and 1551 (Rottok, 43, 75). Andrew Colt was vicar of Redgorton, 1574-91, and Oliver Colt was procurator for the burgh of Irvine, 1590 (Irvine, i, p. 63). A succession of Colts were merchant burgesses of Perth in the sixteenth century, and the Colts of Gartsherrie, Lanarkshire, are said to be an offshoot from the Perthshire family.
