1921 England and Wales Census records are now available!

On 6 January 2022 the 1921 England and Wales Census records were made available online via the FindMyPast website. The records have been indexed and are searchable via the usual methods. These records are only viewable on a pay-per-view basis and are not included in any of FindMyPast's existing subscriptions with the exception of the 12 month premium subscription.

"COULL, COWL, COWLE. From Coull in Aberdeenshire. William de Cull was one of the witnesses to a charter by John, earl of Huntington to Norman filius Malcolm of the lands of Lesslyn etc., between 1219-37 (CAB., p. 548). John Cowl possessed a tenement in Glasgow in 1458 (REG., 369), and Sir John Cowill, a cleric, was witness in Aberdeen, 1567 (Aboyne, p. 107). Patrick Coule at Newburgh is mentioned in the Lindores Chartulary in 1479 (LAC., 153). David Cowle, a native of Scotland, had letters of naturalization in England in 1481 (Bain, rv, 1468), and in the same year Alexander Coule was admitted burgess of Aberdeen (NSCM., i, p. 29). The Coulls were formerly a numerous race in Cullen, and among them, John was the most common Christian name: "There's Hooker Jock and Souter Jock, And cripple Jock the tail yer, Jock-o-boy, the Din-o'-Guil, And Lang Jock the Jailer."
