"ISBISTER. An Orcadian surname of local origin. There is an Isbister in the parish of Kendall, another in Birsay, a third in South Ronaldsuy, and still other two in Northmavine and Whalsay in Shetland. The surname, however, comes "from none of these, but from a portion of the large township of Grimeston in Harray, once known (though not in the rentals) as the town of Isbister" (Old Lore Misc., v, p. 32). Robert Ysbuster, who was a witness in Harray in 1557, appears again in 1565 as Robert Ysbister of that Ilk, Malkom Eysbuster was bailie of Harray in 1607, and Huchoun Isbister and Adam Isbister were witnesses in Kirkwall in 1610 (REO., p. 108, 120, 178,184). Four persons named Ysebuster were members of the bailie court of Stenness, 1576, and Malcolm Yisbuster was bailie of Harray, 1605 (OSR., i, p. 269,275). 0 0 0 "(The surnames of Scotland.
