Historical References
"JEANS. A surname recorded in Moray, and perhaps the same as Janes formerly current in Aberdeenshire. Macbain (v, p. 31) suggests it is a metronymic form from Jean = John. Agnes Jenis, spouse to William Tullo in Kynclune, is in record, 1510 (RAA., n, p. 395). It might be local from the place name Geanies, the earliest recorded form of which was Genes. Ingeramous de Genes appears as witness at Berwick, 1275, and he probably derived his name from Guines near Calais, an old spelling of which was Gynes. See GYNES. "(The surnames of Scotland. Birth, Death and Marriage Records for the Jeans Genealogy

Although records vary from country to country, they are normally the most formal record of a person's relations. From the sources listed below it will be possible to locate a birth record and, from that record, a birth certificate may be obtainable which is likely to list the names of the parents, therefore taking you back another generation. A marriage certificate may also list the names of the respective fathers of the bride and groom which may then help you to find them earlier in life on a census record enabling you to fill out more detail in the Jeans family tree.
