Sir Thomas de Kirknes, knight, witnessed a charter by Henry de St. Clair, earl of Orkney, at Kirkwaw in 1391 (RMS., i, 824; Diplomatarium Norvegicum, n, p. 402). Angus of Kirkness appears as archdeacon of Hjaetland (i.e. Shetland) in 1426 (Dipl Nora, n, p. 512), John of Kirknes was lawman of Orkney in 1438 (SCM., v, p. 391), and John Kirkness of that Ilk was lawrikman in North Sandwick in 1678 (SHR., xrv, p. 59).
