Historical References
"MOAR. A surname apparently confined to Orkney and Shetland. Probably from Mowir, "an old alternative name for the land usually styled Mobisland (anciently Mobisyord) in the rentals, lying in North Dyke (Clouston," p. 33), or perhaps simply a variant of Mora, q.v. Thomas Mor, tacksman of Marwick, 1492, and Alexander More, tacksman of Quyis in the same year (REO., p. 406, 411). Stewin Moir was juror on an assize at Housgarth, Sandwick, in 1553; and John Moir, juror on assize in Birsay in 1574 (ibid., p. 106, 136). William John Moar died in Edinburgh, 1939. "(The surnames of Scotland. George Fraser Black, 1866-1948)

Birth, Death and Marriage Records for the Moar Family History
Birth, Death and Marriage records are often the best method of making the links to the Moar Genealogy that will form part of your family tree. Although records vary from country to country, they are normally the most formal record of a person's relations. From the sources listed below it will be possible to locate a birth record and, from that record, a birth certificate may be obtainable which is likely to list the names of the parents, therefore taking you back another generation. A marriage certificate may also list the names of the respective fathers of the bride and groom which may then help you to find them earlier in life on a census record enabling you to fill out more detail in the Moar family tree.
