"PATE. A diminutive of PATRICK, q.v. A surname found in Midlothian and Lanark, and an old name in Fife. Alexander Pate was canon of St. Andrews, 1528 (Macdonald, 2185). James Pate in Woodhead, Lanark, to be constable, 1709 (Minutes, p. 57). George Paitt in Caingour, 1626, and twenty-three more of the name are recorded in Lanark Commissariot Record. As forename: Pait Quheyt, 1525 (Rental), Pait Plumer in Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 522). This is an ancient name in Fife, 1587, and later, spelled Pait. At and around this date there were many Patties, Patons, and Patricks in Fife, and Pait may therefore have been a diminutive of one of these names. "(The surnames of Scotland.
