Historical References
"SINTON. Of territorial origin from the ancient barony of the same name now included to the parish of Ashkirk, Selkirkshire. An inquisition made at Selkirk, July 23, 1305, found that William, formerly King of Scotland [1165-1214] gave the sheriffdom of Selkirk to one Andrew de Synton to be held by answering to the King and his heirs for the issues, and being freed of the farm of the castle ward of Roxburgh and suit thereto, which he and his heirs were used to make for the barony of Synton" (Bain, n, 1681). Four generations following the first Andrew are mentioned in the finding, the fourth, also named Andrew de Synton, while holding the sheriffdom, "was taken at the battle of Dunbar, and sent to the Castle of Fodringeye where he died to prison" (loc. cit.). Alexander de Sintun, c. 1200, witnessed a charter by Henry de Graham (RHM., i, p. 3), and c. 1259 a later Alexander de Sinton also appears as witness to the same record (ibid., p. 7). This later Alexander is also a witness, c. 1260-68, to a quitclaim by Malcolm de Constableton and Alicia, his wife, of a carucate to Edulfistune (REG., 216). Andrew de Sintun witnessed charters by John, son of Michael de Methkil, to the Abbey of Melrose, c. 1230-31 (Wemyss, n, p. xvi-xvii). Marie de Synton of the county of Roxburghe rendered homage in 1296 for her lands. Her seal bears a figure of eight rays, and S' Marie de Sintvn (Bain, n, p. 199, 532). She was, however, ordered to deliver up her lands to the king of England, and about the same time Isabella, wife of the sheriff mentioned above, was allowed to receive back a portion of her lands to cover certain expenses (Rot. Scot., i). About the middle of the fifteenth century the lands of Sinton are found to joint possession of the Scots of Sinton and the Veitches of Dawic. "(The surnames of Scotland. George Fraser Black, 1866-1948)
