Historical References
"SOUTHWICK. From Southwick in Kirkcudbrightshire. Gilbert de Southaic, son of Gospatric [son of Orm], was witness in 1210 to a grant by Alan, son of Roland, to Roger de Lascy (Bain, i, 553). The share of Patric de Sutheyk or Sutheyc, heir portioner of Helewisa de Levintone, was retained in the king's hands in 1274 (Bain, n, 21, 27). In 1292 an inquisition made at Carlisle in April as to the age of Gilbert, son and heir of Patrick de Sutnaik, found that he was born in Tinwald in Scotland and was 21 years of age (ibid., n, 585). On his rendering homage the escheator ultra Trent was commanded to give him seisin of his father's lands (ibid., 592). In the same year (1292) he, along with others, sued Robert de Brus senior and Christina, his wife, for the sixth part of the half of the manor of Glassanby (ibid., p. 150). In 1296 Gilbert de Suthayck is recorded as holding lands in Skelton and Kirkeandres, paying 75s. at Easter; in August he rendered homage for his lands and shortly after was juror on an inquisition made at Berwick on lands in Dumfriesshire (ibid., p. 172, 185, 215). At the Michaelmas term, 1296, the sheriff of Cumberland charged himself 67s. 2'/2d. for the lands of Gilbert de Sothehack in Skelton, and 23s. 4d. for his lands in Kirkeandres, and in December, 1298, the same sheriff was directed to take without delay the land of Gilbert Sotheayk in the vill of Skeldon and Kirkeandres (ibid., 841, 1042). In June, 1300, a sixth part of the lands held in dower by the late Sarra, widow of Richard de Levynton, were ordered to be delivered to Gilbert de Southeyk (ibid., 1140). Thomas de Sutheyche of Dumfriesshire also rendered homage in 1296 (ibid., 810). Walter de Southuyk was rector of the church of Kirkpatrick-Croe in 1320 (REG., p. 229), and Gilbert de Southeyk or Sutheg is mentioned as chancellor of Glasgow Cathedral in 1337 and again in 1343 (Pap. Lett., n, p. 540; Pap. Pet., i, p. 15). "(The surnames of Scotland. George Fraser Black, 1866-1948)
