Historical References

"SPROAT, SPHOT, SPHOTT, SPROUT. Perhaps from Sprat, an Old English personal name, but more likely to be of Scandinavian origin (Redin, p. 8). The tradition of those bearing this name in Scotland is that their ancestors were Saxons who came into Scotland after the Norman Conquest of England. The first recorded of the name in Scotland appears to be Hugh Sprot of Ur who witnessed a charter by Eustace Baliol granting the church and lands of Hur (Urr) in 1262 to the monks of Holyrood (LSC., 81). Adam Spfut or Spr'ut was witness in Glasgow, c. 1290 (REG., p. 200). Richard Sprot of Bryset, Roxburghshire, is recorded in 1307 (Sc. Ant., v, p. 22), and Walter Sprot was tenant of Newtoun in Moffatdale, 1376 (RHM., i, p. bui). William Sprout and John Sprout were elected lineators of Aberdeen, 1398 (CRA., p. 374), William Sprot was admitted burgess there in 1443, John Sprat in 1457, and William Sprut in 1479 (NSCM., i, p. 8, 15, 28). Robert Sprute, witness at Inuerarite, 1505 (REB., i, 222). Twelve of the name are in the Commissariot Record of Kirkcudbright between 1663-1800. "(The surnames of Scotland.
