"WAUCHOPE. Territorial, from the district of Wauchopedale in the parish of Langholm, Dumfriesshire. The family appears however to have been early settled in Roxburghshire, but their early charters have been destroyed. Robert de Walghope rendered homage at Aberdeen, 1296, and Thomas Walghope in Edinburgh, a tenant under the bishop of St. Andrews. The seal of the latter bears a hawk or raven killing a bird, S' Thome Walchop (Bain, n, p. 195, 205, 555). Thomas de Walchope was sub vicecomes de Perth, 1379 (Scon, p. 144). Meg Walchop is recorded in Aberdeen, 1408 (CWA., p. 316). David Wauchoip was procurator of the Scottish Nation in the University of Orleans, 1502 (SHSM., n, p. 95), and in the records of the Scots men-at-arms in France the name appears as Vaucop and Vulcob. Walichop 1262, Wauhope 1530, Wawchop 1589. In the North of Ireland it is pronounced Wahab. "(The surnames of Scotland. George Fraser Black, 1866-1948)
