Researching Dan Murphy

After graduating from the University of Ottawa with a degree in Communications in 1992, Murphy attended BCIT’s Broadcast Journalism program where he graduated in 1995. He quickly got his start in television when he joined Sports Page in Vancouver where he worked as a writer/reporter/producer from 1995 to 1999. Murphy was then hired as a reporter by Sportsnet in November 1999 and hosted Vancouver Grizzlies NBA broadcasts on Sportsnet and VTV during the 2000–01 season before joining Canucks telecasts the following season.

He joined Gloucester Rugby for the 2011/2012 season. On 2 April 2013, it was announced that Murphy had signed a two-year contract extension to keep him at Gloucester until the end of the 2014–15 season. On 15 January 2015, Murphy signed a new three-year contract extension to stay with Gloucester until the end of the 2017–18 season.

However, Murphy announced he parted ways with Gloucester, after granted his early contract release, where he would officially join Harlequins from the 2016–17 season.

On 13 June 2017, Murphy left Harlequins to join Gloucestershire based club Hartpury RFC in the RFU Championship from the 2017–18 season.

Born in Ballincollig, County Cork, Murphy first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Cork minor team, before later joining the under-21 and intermediate sides. He joined the senior panel during the 1997 championship. Murphy went on to play a bit part for Cork, and won one All-Ireland medal, one Munster medal and one National Hurling League medal as a non-playing substitute.

At club level Murphy is a one-time championship medallist in the intermediate grade with Ballincollig.

Throughout his career Murphy made just one championship appearance for Cork. He left the inter-county team following the conclusion of the 1999 championship.

Born in Cork, Murphy left school at the age of nineteen, and immediately found work as an Executive Officer in the Aviation Division of the Department of Transport and Power. He moved to the personnel division in 1968 but, before the end of the year, left to take up the post of General Secretary of the Association of Executive Officers of the Civil Service, a small trade union with around 1,500 members.

Murphy immediately affiliated the union to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU). He renamed it as the "Civil Service Executive Union", and later as the "Public Service Executive Union", and persuaded a number of smaller unions to merge into it.

Murphy was elected as President of the ICTU in 1981/82. He championed the Social Partnership system; on his retirement in 2009, Fiona Lee said that "It is doubtful if we could have had Social Partnership for the past 20 years without Dan Murphy's vision and dedication". In 2010, he was appointed as chair of the civil service platform for implementing the Croke Park Agreement.
