Edward Junius Black

Edward Junius Black (October 30, 1806 – September 1, 1846) was a United States Representative and lawyer from Georgia. His son was U.S. Representative George Robison Black.

Born in Beaufort, South Carolina, in 1806, the elder Black graduated from the Richmond Academy in Augusta, Georgia, studied law, gained admittance to the state bar in 1827 and began practicing law in Augusta.

Black served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1829 to 1831. He moved to Screven County, Georgia, in 1832. In 1838, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives as a Whig to represent Georgia in the 26th United States Congress and served one term from March 4, 1839, until March 3, 1841, as he lost his reelection bid as a Democrat for a second term in that seat in 1840; however, he did win election as a Democrat to fill a vacancy in the 27th Congress caused by the resignations of Georgia Representatives Julius C. Alford, William Crosby Dawson and Eugenius Aristides Nisbet. He won reelection to that seat in the general election of 1842 and served in the 28th Congress and his second sting in the U.S. congress spanned from January 3, 1842, to March 3, 1845. Black lost his reelection bid in 1844 and returned to practicing law. He died on September 1, 1846, and was buried in a family cemetery near Millettville, South Carolina, in Allendale County.

Edward Black (minister)

Edward Black (December 10, 1793 – May 7, 1845) was a minister and teacher in Canada associated with the Church of Scotland.

Edward was born in Penninghame, Scotland and received his education at local schools and, latterly, at the University of Edinburgh. He began to preach as an assistant to his father in 1815 and moved to Canada with his wife after his father's death in 1822. He settled in Montreal, probably because of an old friend, Peter McGill, and Peter introduced him to the minister of that city's Scotch Presbyterian Church.

Black's career was a time of growth and unrest within the Presbyterian Church of Canada. His own situation required him to seek another source of income for him and his family. He opened a school and had James Moir Ferres assist him as a teacher. His tenure in Montreal sparked action that resulted in the establishment of the synod of the Presbyterian Church of Canada. His early death was deeply mourned and much was written of his contributions to his church and community.

Edward Black (producer)

Edward Black (18 August 1900, Birmingham - 30 November 1948, London) was a British film producer, best known for being head of production at Gainsborough Studios in the late 1930s and early 1940s, during which time he oversaw production of the Gainsborough melodramas. He also produced such classic films as The Lady Vanishes (1938). Black has been called "one of the unsung heroes of the British film industry." In 1946 Mason called Black "the one good production executive" that J. Arthur Rank had. Frank Launder called Black "a great showman and yet he had a great feeling for scripts and spent more time on them than anyone I have ever known. His experimental films used to come off as successful as his others."

Black specialized in making comedies, thrillers and low-budget musicals. He had a lot of success making comedy vehicles for stars such as Will Hay and Arthur Askey. He also produced early films from Carol Reed and Alfred Hitchcock and was an early supporter of writer directors Sidney Gilliat and Frank Launder.
