James Norris (politician)
James Norris (February 1820 – August 1, 1891) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Lincoln in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal member from 1874 to 1878.
He was born in Argyleshire, Scotland in 1820 and came to Peel County, Upper Canada with his parents around 1834. He moved to St. Catharines, where he formed a partnership with Sylvester Neelon in shipping, milling and the timber trade. After the partnership dissolved, Norris continued to be involved in transporting goods to foreign markets, primarily England. He served on the town council, serving a term as mayor. In 1847, he married Sophronia Neelon, his partner's sister; in 1863, he married Elizabeth Waud, after his first wife's death. He was first elected to the House of Commons in the 1874 federal election but was unseated after an appeal. He won the by-election that followed later that year. Norris resigned his seat in April 1877 and then was reelected in a May 1877 by-election. He ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 1878 and 1882. Norris died in St. Catharines at the age of 71.

James Flack Norris (January 20, 1871 – August 4, 1940) was an American chemist. Born in Baltimore, Maryland to a Methodist minister, Norris was educated in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. before studying at Johns Hopkins University, where he graduated with an A.B. in Chemistry. After graduating in 1892, he remained at the university to work as a Fellow until 1895, when he was awarded his Ph.D. and became an academic at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He left MIT in 1904 to become the first Professor of Chemistry at the newly formed Simmons College, before returning to take up the position of Professor of Organic Chemistry and, after its creation in 1926, the first Director of MIT's Research Laboratory of Organic Chemistry.
Outside of his work as an academic, Norris served as President of the American Chemical Society from 1925 to 1926 and as Vice-President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) from 1925 to 1928. He died in Cambridge, Massachusetts on August 4, 1940. The James Flack Norris Award is named in his honour.

James Norris (c. 1774 – 19 January 1838) was an English lawyer, notable for his role in the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. Appointed stipendiary magistrate of Manchester in March 1818, his reports to the Home Office, describing unrest and (alleged) paramilitary activity amongst the populace, have been described as "full of excessive alarms" and may have coloured the attitude of troops sent to maintain order. Much of this correspondence was collated (with highly critical commentary) in a report to Parliament by John Edward Taylor, founder of the Manchester Guardian newspaper. Nevertheless, his career suffered little in the aftermath of the massacre, and he was appointed as Chairman of Quarter Sessions for Salford Hundred in 1825, retaining that post until his death in 1838. Despite links with the Middleforth district of Penwortham, where he inherited a mansion built by his family in the Tudor era, Norris was the only magistrate involved in the Peterloo Massacre who actually resided in Manchester at the time.
