Researching James Stewart

Born and raised in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Stewart started acting while at Princeton University. After graduating in 1932, he began a career as a stage actor, appearing on Broadway and in summer stock productions. In 1935, he landed his first supporting role in a movie and in 1938 he had his breakthrough in Frank Capra's ensemble comedy You Can't Take It with You. The following year, Stewart garnered his first of five Academy Award nominations for his portrayal of an idealized and virtuous man who becomes a senator in Capra's Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939). He won his only Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in the comedy The Philadelphia Story (1940), which also starred Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. A licensed amateur pilot, Stewart enlisted in the Army Air Forces soon after the US entered the Second World War in 1941. After action in Europe, he attained the rank of colonel and received several awards for his service. He was promoted to brigadier general in the Air Force Reserve in 1959, and retired in 1968 at which time he was awarded the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal. President Ronald Reagan promoted Stewart to the rank of major general in 1985.

Stewart's first postwar role was as George Bailey in Capra's It's a Wonderful Life (1946). Although the film was not a major success upon release, he earned an Oscar nomination and the film has become a Christmas classic, as well as one of his most well known roles. In the 1950s, Stewart played darker, more morally ambiguous characters in movies directed by Anthony Mann, including Winchester '73 (1950), The Glenn Miller Story (1954) and The Naked Spur (1953), and by Alfred Hitchcock in Rope (1948), Rear Window (1954), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), and Vertigo (1958). His other films in the '50s included the Broadway adaptation Harvey (1950) and the courtroom drama Anatomy of a Murder (1959), both of which landed him Oscar nominations. He was one of the most popular film stars of the '50s, with most of his films becoming box office successes. Stewart's later Westerns included The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) with John Wayne and Cheyenne Autumn (1964), both directed by John Ford. He appeared in many popular family comedies during the 1960s. After brief ventures into television acting, Stewart semi-retired by the 1980s. He received many honorary awards, including an Academy Honorary Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, both in 1985.

Stewart remained unmarried until his 40s and was dubbed "The Great American Bachelor" by the press. In 1949, he married former model Gloria Hatrick McLean. They had twin daughters, and he adopted her two sons from her previous marriage. The marriage lasted until McLean's death in 1994; Stewart died of a pulmonary embolism three years later.

Born in Lower Montague and educated at Prince of Wales College and Dalhousie University, he taught school in Georgetown for several years before entering the legal profession.

In 1917, the Conservative Party recruited Stewart, then a young lawyer, to be the party's candidate in a by-election in King's County. Stewart won the vote and took his seat in the provincial legislative assembly.

In 1921 he was elected leader of the Conservative Party and led the party to victory in the 1923 election but his government was defeated in the 1927 election due to Stewart's opposition to total prohibition of alcohol.

He remained party leader and defeated the Liberal government in the 1931 election thanks, in part, to the difficulty all incumbent governments had in dealing with the Great Depression.

Stewart took on several cabinet positions himself and also intensively lobbied the federal government for relief so the province could deal with the economic hardships Prince Edward Islanders were suffering during the Depression. He obtained a larger federal subsidy for the island but the workload had a toll on Stewart and he died in office in 1933 at the age of 59.

About 1800, he built the Stewart-Hawley-Malloy House; it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

He was the second son of James Stewart, 5th Earl of Galloway and his wife Lady Catherine Montgomerie, daughter of Alexander Montgomerie, 9th Earl of Eglinton.

He was educated at Eton, and served as an officer in the Scots Guards for over 30 years, becoming a Lieutenant-General in 1758.

He was a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Parliament of Great Britain for 27 years, representing Wigtown Burghs 1734–41 and 1747–54 and Wigtownshire 1741–47 and 1754–61.

His younger brother William was also an MP for Wigtown Burghs.

Stewart was born at "Tobacco Stick" (now Madison) in Dorchester County, Maryland, and attended the local school. He went on to study law in Baltimore, Maryland, was admitted to the bar in 1829, and commenced practice in Cambridge, Maryland. In addition to law, Stewart also engaged in the building of ships and houses. He was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1838 to the Twenty-sixth Congress, and served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1843 to 1845. Stewart was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fourth, Thirty-fifth, and Thirty-sixth Congresses, serving from March 4, 1855, to March 3, 1861. During the Thirty-fifth Congress, Stewart served as chairman of the Committee on Patents.

Stewart was not a candidate for renomination to Congress in 1860, and resumed the practice of his profession in Cambridge. He became a judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals and served as chief justice of the circuit court from 1867 until his death in Cambridge. Stewart is interred in Christ Protestant Episcopal Church Cemetery.

He was elected at the 1922 general election as Member of Parliament (MP) for Glasgow St. Rollox constituency, having contested the seat unsuccessfully at the 1918 general election. He held the seat until his death in 1931 at the age of 67, having served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Health for Scotland in the 1924 Labour government.

On his election in 1923, The Times described him as having started life as a hairdresser at the age of 14, now having two businesses in Glasgow, having been associated with municipal life in Glasgow for a number of years, and being a member of the Town Council.

James Wallace Stewart became an assistant pathologist at the Bland Sutton Institute of Pathology, Middlesex Hospital, London, in 1948 after national service and was promoted to senior lecturer in 1950, reader in 1959, and professor in 1970, retiring in 1986. He was treasurer of the British Society for Haematology for its first 15 years, and a founder fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. His laboratory was one of the first in the United Kingdom to have a Coulter counter, and he helped to develop quality assurance in haematology. From the early 1970s he innovatively treated patients with haematological disorders. He was consultant haematologist to the London Clinic well beyond his 70th year. He leaves a wife, Peggy; five children; and eight grandchildren.

He was born in Annapolis, Maryland, the son of Anthony Stewart, a loyalist. Stewart came to Halifax with his father around 1780. He was educated in Halifax and at University of Edinburgh. In 1790, he married Elizabeth, the daughter of John Halliburton, a member of the Nova Scotia Council. Stewart was elected to the assembly in a 1798 by-election held following the death of Jonathan Sterns. In May 1798, he was named solicitor general. He became a justice in the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in 1815. Stewart served as a member of the Nova Scotia Council from 1816 until his death in Halifax. He is buried in the Old Burying Ground (Halifax, Nova Scotia).

Stewart was born in Ballymena to a Protestant family, and studied at the Ballymena Academy. He became a Queen's Scout and took an interest in his Scottish heritage. He trained as a teacher at Stranmillis University College, and there met active communist Edwina Menzies, the two marrying in 1954.

In 1955, Stewart joined the Communist Party of Northern Ireland, initially while teaching at Hemsworth Square School and then Somerdale School on the Shankill Road. He and Menzies attended the World Youth Festival in 1957, and in the same year he became general secretary of the party's youth section. He rapidly became a key figure in the party, editing Unity, its newspaper, completing the drafting of the party's programme, Ireland's Path to Socialism, and becoming its Deputy General Secretary in 1964.

The Communist Party of Northern Ireland merged into the Communist Party of Ireland in 1970, and Stewart left teaching to become a full-time party worker, remaining Deputy General Secretary of the new group. In this role, he was active in the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association, Belfast Trades Council.

He stood in the 1973 Northern Ireland Assembly election in Belfast West, but took last place with only 123 votes, and came bottom of the poll for Belfast City Council at the 1977, 1981 and 1985 local elections.

Stewart rose to become general secretary of the party in 1984, serving until 2001, when he instead became its chairman.

Stewart played for the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup, he was recruited by the Greater Western Sydney Giants with pick 27 in the 2012 national draft and made his debut in round 23, 2013, against at Metricon Stadium. He was traded to Essendon at the end of the 2016 season.

He collected ten disposals and kicked three goals in his debut for the club, in round 8 of the 2017 AFL season, helping them to a 17-point win over at the MCG.

Stewart is currently studying a Bachelor of Commerce/Arts at Deakin University. He completed school in 2012 at Scotch College, Melbourne.

Alexander Stewart (c. 1799 – 15 January 1883), arrived in South Australia on the Duchess of Northumberland in December 1839 with his wife, two stepsons and two stepdaughters and settled on a property on the Mosquito Plains, near Naracoorte. Nearby properties were taken up around the same time by John Stewart, for whom Stewart's Ranges near Naracoorte was named, and Charles Stewart of Avenue Plains (near Lucindale, 40 km from Naracoorte). It is not certain what relation Charles and John were to Alexander. Some time before 1870 Alexander took over a cattle property "Woodlands" at Morphett Vale.

James Stewart, was born in the South East of South Australia, and grew up at "Moy Hall" on the Mosquito Plains. He was educated at Portland, Victoria, St. Peter's College, and Whinham's Grammar School in North Adelaide. He married and took over a sheep station in Victoria, which he later sold at a substantial profit, and retired to "Hackham House", Hackham, and was a member of the Adelaide Hunt Club.

James Stewart was MHA for Noarlunga from March 1870 – December 1871. He failed in his bid to be re-elected.

He died at Hackham House after a long illness. He married twice; he had a daughter and three sons by his first wife and a daughter by his second.
