James White (author)
James White (7 April 1928 – 23 August 1999) was a Northern Irish author of science fiction novellas, short stories and novels. He was born in Belfast and returned there after spending some early years in Canada. After a few years working in the clothing industry, he worked at Short Brothers Ltd., an aircraft company based in Belfast, from 1965 until taking early retirement in 1984 as a result of diabetes. White married Margaret Sarah Martin, another science fiction fan, in 1955 and the couple had three children. He died of a stroke.
He became a fan of science fiction in 1941 and co-wrote two fan magazines, from 1948 to 1953 and 1952 to 1965. Encouraged by other fans, White began publishing short stories in 1953, and his first novel was published in 1957. His best-known novels were the twelve of the Sector General series, the first published in 1962 and the last after his death. White also published nine other novels, two of which were nominated for major awards, unsuccessfully.
White abhorred violence, and medical and other emergencies were the sources of dramatic tension in his stories. The "Sector General" series is regarded as defining the genre of medical science fiction, and as introducing a memorable crew of aliens. Although missing winning the most prestigious honours four times, White gained other awards for specific works and for contributions to science fiction. He was also Guest-of-Honour of several conventions.

James White (North Carolina politician)
James White (June 16, 1749 – October, 1809) was an American physician, lawyer, and politician. He was an early settler at Nashville, Tennessee and in Louisiana. He was a member of the Province of North Carolina House of Burgesses and a delegate for North Carolina in the Continental Congress and a non-voting member of the U.S. House for the Southwest Territory. In historical writings, he is usually referred to as "Dr. James White" to distinguish him from General James White, the founder of Knoxville, Tennessee.
White was born into a prosperous mercantile family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Anne (Willcox) and James White. His early education was at the College of St. Omer, a Jesuit school in modern-day France (then part of the Austrian Netherlands). When he returned he entered the University of Pennsylvania and studied medicine and law. After graduating he moved to the Province of North Carolina.
In 1785, White was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives. In 1786, North Carolina sent him as a delegate to the Continental Congress where he served until 1788. Late in 1786, Congress named him Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the southern department. After that he was frequently absent from Congress, traveling the Carolina and Georgia frontiers negotiating with the Indian tribes. After his congressional service he moved to the frontier, buying land and settling in what became Nashville, Tennessee.
When the Southwest Territory's legislature was formed in 1794, White was selected as its delegate to the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1794 to 1796. After Tennessee gained statehood in 1796, he returned home to Davidson County.
James White was fluent in French and Spanish. In the 1780s he had become involved with John Sevier's plan to place the State of Franklin under Spanish rule. He used his position and travels as Indian superintendent to serve as agent conducting negotiations between Sevier and the governor of Spanish Louisiana. In the 1790s he was involved in William Blount's plan to work with the Indians and Britain in staging an invasion of Spanish Florida. As his role in these schemes became known, he moved to the Spanish territory of New Orleans in 1799, settling in what later became St. Martin Parish, Louisiana.
While his earlier actions caused problems in Tennessee, they weren't widely known. When the United States expansion reached him again President Jefferson named him as a territorial judge in 1804, initially for the District of Louisiana, and then for the Territory of Orleans. His family prospered in Louisiana. His son, (Edward Douglass White Sr.), was Governor of Louisiana. His grandson, Edward Douglass White, served as Chief Justice of the United States.
James White died at home in 1809 in St. James Parish, Louisiana.

James White (1747 – August 14, 1821) was an American pioneer and soldier who founded Knoxville, Tennessee, in the early 1790s. Born in Rowan County, North Carolina, White served as a captain in the county's militia during the American Revolutionary War. In 1783, he led an expedition into the upper Tennessee Valley, where he discovered the future site of Knoxville. White served in various official capacities with the failed State of Franklin (1784–1788) before building White's Fort in 1786. The fort was chosen as the capital of the Southwest Territory in 1790, and White donated the land for a permanent city, Knoxville, in 1791. He represented Knox County at Tennessee's constitutional convention in 1796. During the Creek War (1813), White served as a brigadier general in the Tennessee militia.
White had a reputation for patience and tactfulness that was often lacking in his fellow Euro-American settlers on the Appalachian frontier. As lieutenant colonel commandant of the Knox County militia, White managed to defuse a number of potentially hostile situations between the settlers and the local Native Americans. He donated the land for many of Knoxville's early public buildings, and helped establish Blount College (now the University of Tennessee). White's descendants continued to play prominent roles in the political and economic affairs of Knoxville into the twentieth century.

James Cobb White (29 November 1855 – 18 January 1927) was an Australian grazier and politician, predominantly in New South Wales.
He was born at the property Edinglassie, near Muswellbrook, to pastoralist Frank White and Mary Hannah Cobb, the second of five brothers. He also had a younger sister, Mary Sarah. He received a private education, initially at Newcastle Grammar School and then in Sydney. On leaving school he worked at the Commercial Bank of Australia. On his father's death in 1875 James entered into a partnership with his elder brother Francis, operating a number of properties, including Edinglassie, while his younger brothers Henry, William, Arthur, and Victor, formed a partnership that operated another family property, Belltrees. In 1880 he commenced construction of a two-storey sandstone house at Edinglassie in a simplified Italianate style, designed by John Horbury Hunt and the second stage was completed around 1895. The property was listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999 as illustrating the degree of opulence achieved and lifestyles led by the leading pastoral families in the area. He was recognised as an authority on Aberdeen Angus and as a breeder of stud cattle, including Durham shorthorn, Devon, Hereford and horses, including Welsh ponies and light Clydesdales. He had a reputation for locating suitable places for sinking a well using a divining rod.

James Wharton White (17 February 1857 – 30 January 1930), often referred to as "Wharton White", was an auctioneer, pastoralist and politician in colonial South Australia. He spent the latter half of his life in Western Australia.
He was born the eldest son of Abraham White (c. 1828 – 15 May 1885), farmer and railway contractor of "Illawarra", Bagot's Well, and his wife Mary, née Wharton, ( – c. 1931). His uncle James "Nobby" White (c. 1820–1890) was a pastoralist and noted politician.
He was educated at James Hosking's Gouger Street Academy, and was four years with John McLaren in the auctioneering firm McLaren, White & Co.
He ran a sheep station some north of Pinnaroo.
In 1881 he was involved in a complex legal argument, which went as far as the Court of Appeal in England, with John "Jack" Neaylon over ownership of the lease later known as Appatoongannie. White and his partner Thomas Neaylon (John's brother) lost.
He represented the Assembly seat of Light from April 1890 to April 1896 as colleague of Jenkin Coles.
In 1894 he paid a six-month visit to the Western Australian goldfields, and at the Kurnalpie field near Coolgardie, staked a claim with one Mr. Thring, and was immediately rewarded with a useful haul of the precious metal, but found nothing at lower depths. On returning to South Australia, he purchased, with Alexander Poynton and James Henderson Howe, from Frank Denford of Mount Serle Station, the lease to the "Angipena Treasure Mine", which had been fraudulently "salted".
He left South Australia for Western Australia sometime before 1897, when he settled in Esperance. He was for a time employed as Rabbit Fence Inspector, and died in the Esperance Hospital.
