Researching John Jameson

Primarily a hard-hitting top-order batsman, Jameson was also a useful occasional offspin or medium-pace bowler. A capable slip fielder, he occasionally kept wicket. On one occasion, Jameson was a member of a Warwickshire team which boasted three international wicket-keepers, but he had to keep wicket nonetheless: Deryck Murray was injured, Rohan Kanhai had given up keeping, and A.C. Smith had been selected for his bowling.

Cricket correspondent, Colin Bateman, noted, "Born into the era of Boycott, Edrich and Amiss, John Jameson had precious few opportunities to break into Test cricket. A brave, attacking opener who was at his best trying to hammer fast bowling out of the ground, he played a couple of Tests in 1971 but did not help his cause by being run out in three of his first four innings". He is unique in being the only England cricketer to be run out in both innings of a Test match. In addition, he is the only Test cricketer ever to be similarly dismissed in three successive Test innings.

Jameson was diagnosed as Diabetes mellitus type 2 in 2004.

Born in Ireland, the son of John Jameson of Anfield, County Dublin, he was educated at Sandhurst. He served in the 18th Regiment of Foot, the 20th Hussars, and the Queen's Own Worcestershire Hussars. In 1914, he raised the 24th (County of London) Battalion (The Queen's), and served in Dublin and Flanders.

He served as HM Inspector of Factories and was managing director of William Jameson distillers, Dublin.

From 1895 until 1906 he served as member of parliament for West Clare. Elected as a member of the Irish Parliamentary Party, he took an independent line in the 1900s and in 1904 he transferred his support to the Conservative Party. He contested the 1906 general election in Chatham, but was defeated by a candidate for the Labour Representation Committee.

He married Mary Cabbell of Cromer, and died in 1919 at his residence in Ealing, London.

He was also an advocate, and his father was Andrew Jameson, Lord Ardwall.

He unsuccessfully contested the 1912 Edinburgh East by-election, where he had already been selected as the Unionist candidate before the MP died. (At that stage he was nominally a Liberal Unionist, although they merged with the Conservatives only three months later.)

He was elected in Edinburgh West as a supporter of David Lloyd George's coalition government in 1918, but he lost his seat to the Liberals in 1922.

In 1923 Jameson was appointed Sheriff-substitute of the sheriff of the Lothians and Peebles and became a member of the Council of the Cockburn Association, a position he retained until 1932.
