Some Famous People called John Wood

John Taylor Wood

John Taylor Wood (August 13, 1830 – July 19, 1904) was an officer in the United States Navy and the Confederate Navy. He resigned from the U.S. Navy at the beginning of the American Civil War, and became a "leading Confederate naval hero" as a captain in the Confederate Navy. He was a lieutenant serving aboard when it engaged in 1862, one of the most famous naval battles in Civil War and U.S. Naval history. He was caught in 1865 in Georgia with Confederate President Jefferson Davis' party, but escaped and made his way to Cuba. From there, he got to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he settled and became a merchant. His wife and children joined him there, and more children were born in Canada, which is where he lived out the remainder of his life.

John Wood (English actor)

John Wood (5 July 1930 – 6 August 2011) was an English actor, known for his performances in Shakespeare and his lasting association with Tom Stoppard. In 1976, he received a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance in Stoppard's Travesties. He was nominated for two other Tony Awards for his roles in Sherlock Holmes (1975), and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1968). In 2007, Wood was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's New Year Honours List. Wood also appeared in WarGames, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Orlando, Shadowlands, The Madness of King George, Richard III, Sabrina, and Chocolat.

John Fisher Wood

John Fisher Wood, (October 12, 1852 – March 14, 1899) was an Ontario businessman, lawyer and politician. He represented Brockville in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal-Conservative from 1882 to 1899.

He was born in Addison in Canada West in 1852 (some sources say 1850), the son of a Scottish immigrant. He taught school in Farmersville (Athens). He later studied law with Christopher Finlay Fraser in Brockville, was called to the bar in 1876 and set up practice in Brockville. In 1890, he was named Queen's Counsel. He served as solicitor for the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville and was also vice-president of the Brockville, Westport and Sault Ste. Marie Railway. In 1882, he was elected to the House of Commons. He was deputy speaker in the House from 1890 to 1891. From 1892 to 1895, he served as Controller of Inland Revenue; he served as Controller of Customs from 1895 to 1896. Controllers were government ministers. Wood was part of the "nest of traitors" who forced Mackenzie Bowell to resign as Prime Minister in 1896.

He died in Toronto in 1899 of heart failure.

John Wood (congressman)

John Wood (September 6, 1816 – May 28, 1898) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania.

John Wood (uncle of Alan Wood, Jr.) was born in Philadelphia. He attended the Friends Society schools of Philadelphia, and was employed by his father in the manufacture of tools and agricultural machinery from 1832 to 1840. He was engaged in the manufacture of iron and steel near Wilmington, Delaware, from 1841 to 1844. He moved to Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, in 1844 and engaged in the milling of iron and steel. He was first burgess of Conshohocken.

Wood was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth Congress. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1860. He resumed his former manufacturing pursuits and died in Conshohocken in 1898. He was interred in Montgomery Cemetery in West Norriton Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, near Norristown, Pennsylvania.

John Wood (activist)

John J. Wood (born January 29, 1964) is the Founder of Room to Read, a global non-profit organization focused on literacy and gender equality in education. He is the author of Creating Room to Read: A Story of Hope in the Battle for Global Literacy, Leaving Microsoft to Change the World: An Entrepreneur's Odyssey to Educate the World's Children and the children's book Zak the Yak with Books on His Back. He is a four-term member of the Clinton Global Initiative's Advisory Board and a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute. Wood was selected for the inaugural class of Young Global Leaders by the World Economic Forum and was awarded Microsoft's first "Alumni of the Year" award by Bill and Melinda Gates. Wood has served on the Board of Directors for Net Impact and One Acre Fund, and is currently an Advisory Board member of Global Citizen Year, New Story and Possible Health.

John Wood (racing driver)

John J. Wood (born January 23, 1952 in Morristown, New Jersey) is an American former racing driver. He began his career in sports car racing, then ventured briefly into open wheel racing from 1978 to 1980, then returned to sports cars.

After finishing 5th in the USAC Formula Super Vee standings in 1978 with a win at Trenton Speedway, Wood moved up to the CART/USAC Championship Car series in 1980 with Mergard Racing. He made his debut at the Ontario Motor Speedway and finished a respectable 12th place. He then failed to qualify for the 1980 Indianapolis 500. He returned in July to race on the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course but crashed out on the first lap. He then failed to qualify for the fall race at the Milwaukee Mile and his Champ Car adventure was over.

He returned to sports car racing, including both the World Sportscar Championship and the Trans Am Series. Although he never won a major race, he competed in the 24 Hours of Daytona several times.

John George Corry Wood

John George Corry Wood (June 29, 1869 – December 28, 1943) was an English-born political figure in British Columbia. He represented Alberni from 1912 to 1916 as a Conservative.

He was born in London, the son of Samuel Wood and Henrietta James, and came to Canada in 1871. Wood was educated in London and returned to Canada in 1889. In 1893, he married Ethel M. Jones. Wood was elected by acclamation in 1912. He was defeated when he ran for reelection to the assembly in 1916, losing to Harlan Carey Brewster. Wood died in Victoria.

John Wood (American football)

John Curtis Wood (born January 20, 1951) is a former professional American football player. He played defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for the New Orleans Saints for one season, in 1973. He appeared in two games with the team that season. He was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the third round of the 1973 NFL draft but did not play for the team.

He attended Louisiana State University, where he was selected to the Associated Press and United Press first-team All-Southeastern Conference teams in 1972 while playing for the LSU Tigers. He was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana and attended Lake Charles High School.
