Some Famous People called Joseph Williams

Joseph Williams (composer)

Joseph Williams (c. 1800–1834) was an English coal-miner and composer of sacred music, known today as West gallery music. Very little is known about his life, other than he lived in Watery Lane, Tipton, Staffordshire. During his short lifetime he published a collection of his compositions, Sacred Music (Tipton: for the Author, c. 1830), containing 20 hymn tunes.

He met an unfortunate death in a mining-related accident on the Himley Road, Dudley, on 14 April 1834. He was walking along the road near to a mine-pit, and an explosion taking place threw a large rock into the air which killed him instantly. The pit's owners, Messrs. Horton, were not penalised for the accident.

A second collection of his music, The Celestial Chorister (London: Joseph Hart, c. 1835), was published posthumously, as the title page states, to raise money for his widow and 6 children. The collection is unusual in that 12 of the hymns take their titles from the 12 signs of the Zodiac.

Joseph Williams (Nevisian cricketer)

Joseph Junior Williams (born 15 December 1989) is a Nevisian cricketer who has played two Twenty20 matches for Nevis. Born on the island, Williams represented the Leeward Islands under-15 team at the 2004–05 West Indies Under-15 Tournament, playing five matches as a left-arm orthodox spinner. Aged 18, he went on to play both matches for Nevis in the 2008 edition of the Stanford 20/20 competition, which featured 21 teams from around the Caribbean region. In the first match, against Montserrat, Williams conceded 21 runs from his two overs without taking a wicket, and in the second match, against Jamaica, he conceded 17 runs from three overs, again without taking a wicket. Williams did not get an opportunity to bat in either match, which were to be the last two matches played by Nevis at Twenty20 level. However, later in 2008, he did go on to play two matches against the touring Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), for a Nevis under-19 side and a Nevis "Pro XI".

Joseph Williams (Barbadian cricketer)

Joseph Henderson Williams (born 1 September 1974) is a former Barbadian cricketer who played several matches for Barbados during the late 1990s. From the parish of Saint Philip, Williams represented the Barbados under-19 team at both the 1993 and 1994 West Indies Youth Championships. He made his first-class debut for Barbados during the 1995–96 season, against Guyana in the Red Stripe Cup. The match was washed out after one day's play, and Williams played only one further match at first-class level, against a touring Free State team the following season. In that match, played at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, he took 3/57 in Free State's only innings, bowling first change behind Henry Austin and Test player Patterson Thompson.

Although he only played two matches at first-class level, Williams had greater success in the limited-overs format, playing six matches over the 1996–97 and 1997–98 seasons of the West Indian domestic one-day competition. He made his List A debut for Barbados against the Windward Islands in October 1996, taking one wicket on debut. In what was arguably his best performance for the team, Williams took 3/33 in the following match against Bermuda, helping to restrict the Bermudians to 215/8 from their 50 overs. His last one-day match for Barbados came against Guyana in October 1997, with his figures of 3/54 the best in the match. Williams did not play for Barbados again, finishing with eight wickets from his six limited-overs matches, alongside his three wickets from two first-class matches.
