Researching Michael Murphy

After NZ Idol, Michael Murphy had signed to BMG records. Murphy's first single debuted at No. 1 and stayed a while at the top of radio charts. He gained a gold status for No Place to Land, his debut album. He then toured New Zealand, singing to sold-out audiences. With 5star Fallout, Michael toured New Zealand, the U.S. and English pubs. He is now working on his solo project, with multi national management by ACTS Agency.

Murphy also represented Australia twice at the Commonwealth Games (in 1990 and 1994), winning two gold medals and one silver medal at the 1994 Games in Victoria (Canada). After retiring from competitive diving, Murphy served as both a Board Member and National Team Selector for Diving Australia. In recognition of his contribution to the sporting community, he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal (an Australian federal government honour) in 2000.

Murphy completed his undergraduate studies at Bond University, where he gained a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours (LLB (Hons)). He was winner of both the Sir Robert Gordon Menzies Scholarship to Harvard, and the Macquarie Bank Graduate Management Scholarship. He holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard Business School. He is currently a managing director with Bain Capital, and was previously a management consultant with Bain & Company.

Murphy may be best known for his defense of the rights of immigrants to constitutional and humane treatment. In 2006, he gave a speech against HB1383, which among other things, sought to deny some immigrants even emergency medical care. The bill was overwhelmingly defeated.

Murphy was nominated in 2007 for the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. From January, 2004 to February, 2007, Murphy served as Chairman of the Republican Party for Marion County (Indianapolis) Indiana.

In 2010, Mike Murphy ran for the 2010 Republican nomination to seat then held by Dan Burton. Murphy lost his 2010 bid for Congress in Indiana's 5th District. He came in 4th in the 7-way race, receiving 9,805 votes (approx. 9% of the vote)

In 2015, Murphy was a major fundraiser for Jeb Bush's presidential campaign. He continues to be a major fundraiser and advisor to Republican candidates across Indiana.

Murphy published his first non-fiction book: "The Kimberlins Go To War: A Union Family in Copperhead Country", on October 21, 2016. The book was published in hardcover by the Indiana Historical Society Press.

His daughter Kate married John O'Donoghue, former Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry South.

Born and raised in north-west Ireland, Murphy's hip was out of place from birth and required surgery at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. After a fast progression through Glenswilly's youth academy, Murphy made his full competitive debut in 2005, having just turned 16, and helped his club reach the Ulster Intermediate Club Football Championship Final that year. He was a member of the team that won his club's first Donegal Senior Football Championship in 2011, and followed this up with two others in 2013 and 2016. Glenswilly also reached the final of the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship in 2013.

A Donegal man, Murphy is his county's all-time leading scorer. At youth level he won an Ulster Minor Football Championship, an Ulster Under-21 Football Championship and contested an All-Ireland Under-21 Football Championship final. Murphy made his competitive debut for his county aged 17 in July 2007 and won the All Stars Young Footballer of the Year in 2009. At 21 years old, Murphy received the Donegal captaincy from newly appointed manager Jim McGuinness, who had worked with Murphy the previous season at under-21 level. In doing so he became one of the youngest captains in the team's history. Four successful seasons followed, with Murphy winning two All Stars, three Ulster Senior Football Championships (including two consecutively) and the Sam Maguire Cup, only the second player in the county's history to raise that trophy as team captain. He received the 2012 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final man of the match award and his catch from a Karl Lacey pass, turn leaving his marker Kevin Keane clutching at air and rocket strike past David Clarke into the roof of the Mayo net in the opening minutes of that game to set the score at 1-0 to 0-0 earned him the Championship Matters Goal of the Championship. A team decline under the management of McGuinness's deputy and successor Rory Gallagher was followed by two further Ulster Senior Football Championships under Declan Bonner, all of which Murphy had achieved by the age of 30. This brought Donegal's total provincial championships to ten, with the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th of these all coming under Murphy's captaincy.

Though targeted by Australian rules football clubs since 2007, Murphy declined all offers to move abroad, preferring instead to pursue further honours in Gaelic football. He has, however, played for the Ireland international rules football team and captained the 2013 and 2014 teams.

Murphy, a key position player from Renmark, came to North Melbourne after being selected with the ninth pick of the 1987 VFL Draft. He played three times in the 1988 VFL season then returned to the club he was recruited from, Glenelg in the SANFL. Murphy was a centre half back in the 1990 Grand Final, which Glenelg lost to Port Adelaide. His performances during the year saw him make the Adelaide Football Club's squad for their entry into the AFL in 1991.

In just his second game, Murphy kicked a bag of six goals against Footscray at Football Park. He however struggled throughout the season with injuries and discipline, missing a total of seven games through suspension from three visits to the tribunal. In 1992 he again made few appearances, but managed an accurate 23 goals and three behinds.

Having been let go by Adelaide, he was picked up by Brisbane with the 81st pick of the 1992 AFL Draft. His biggest contribution came in the club's record 219 to 57 points win over Sydney at the Gabba, where both he and Roger Merrett booted eight goals

According to afl.com Murphy was the most accurate scorer the game has seen amongst players with at least 50 scoring shots, with 76.83% of his shots at goal scoring a goal.

His approach is to challenge the viewer's boundaries using multidimensional techniques in order to create three-dimensional renderings of flat images. His inventions of "Expanded Graphics", the "3D Halftone" and "Suspended Narrative Mobiles" have established an entirely new formula for rendering images.
