Michael Thompson (horn player)
Michael Thompson (born 4 January 1954) is a British horn player.After studying at the Royal Academy of Music, Thompson was appointed Principal Horn with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra aged just 18 years. By the age of 21 he was offered positions as Principal Horn with both the Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras, accepting the Philharmonia position, a post he held for ten years before leaving to fulfil increasing solo and chamber music commitments.
Thompson is a member of the London Sinfonietta, with whom he has given premiere performances of works including Ligeti's Hamburg Concerto. He has recorded solo, chamber, and orchestral works composed by Britten, Haydn, Messiaen, Strauss, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Schumann, and Tippett, among others. He has played on movie soundtracks including Drowning by Numbers as a member of the Michael Nyman Band, The Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter films. His work with Sir Paul McCartney led McCartney to compose Stately Horn, which the Michael Thompson Horn Quartet premiered.
Thompson is an advocate of youth music-making and holds the post of Rehearsal Conductor for the Ulster Youth Orchestra.
Thompson has toured extensively and since 2003 he has been Principal Conductor of the City of Rochester Symphony Orchestra.
Thompson is a Fellow and Aubrey Brain Professor of Horn at the Royal Academy of Music.

Michael "Mike" Thompson (b. on June 16, 1977 in Akwesasne, Ontario) is a retired professional box lacrosse player. Thompson played seven seasons in the National Lacrosse League, six with the Buffalo Bandits.
He signed with the Bandits on August 18, 2006 to replace Ken Montour as back-up goalie to Steve Dietrich. Thompson took over the starting duties from Dietrich due to injuries during the 2007 season and played well enough to inevitably make Dietrich expendable after the season.
In 2008, Montour came back to Buffalo, he and Thompson formed a goalie platoon for the Bandits leading to the franchise's fourth NLL Championship. Thompson would make 39 saves, including one as time expired, as he went the whole way in the 2008 Champion's Cup.
Thompson retired from the NLL following the 2012 NLL season, although he was an unused backup for two games in 2014 for the Rochester Knighthawks.

Sir Michael Warwick Thompson (born 1 June 1931), is a British academic, who served as vice-chancellor of the Universities of East Anglia and Birmingham.
He was educated at the University of Liverpool, where he graduated with a first in physics. He was a D.Sc. in physics in 1963 from the University of Liverpool. His academic work included early research on atomic collisions in solids.
He was appointed Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Sussex in 1965, and remained at Sussex for a further 15 years, during which time he served as pro-vice-chancellor and acting vice-chancellor of the university. In 1980 he was appointed vice-chancellor of the University of East Anglia, and remained in the post until 1987 when he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham, retiring in 1996. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, and was knighted in 1991. He is a member of the Athenaeum Club.
His son Paul Warwick Thompson is currently rector of the Royal College of Art.

Michael Thompson (born 23 June 1962) is an English former karateka and kickboxer who competed in the cruiserweight and heavyweight division. After a long and distinguished career in Kyokushin, in which he won the British Open four times, the Commonwealth Championships in 1988 and the European Championships in 1991 as well as competing three times in the World Open, Thompson later switched to Seidokaikan and reached the final of the 1994 Seidokaikan Karate World Cup. During his time as a Seidokaikan competitor, he also fought as a professional kickboxer in K-1, amassing a 6–5 record and becoming the WKA European Super Cruiserweight Champion.
