Researching Scott Kelly

Kelly's first spaceflight was as pilot of during STS-103 in December 1999. This was the third servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, and lasted for just under eight days. Kelly's second spaceflight was as mission commander of STS-118, a 12-day Space Shuttle mission to the ISS in August 2007. Kelly's third spaceflight was as a crewmember on Expedition 25/26 on the ISS. He arrived at the ISS aboard Soyuz TMA-01M on 9 October 2010, and served as a flight engineer until he took over command of the station on 25 November 2010 at the start of Expedition 26. Expedition 26 ended on 16 March 2011 with the departure of Soyuz TMA-01M.

In November 2012, Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko were selected for a year-long mission to the ISS. Their year in space began with the launch of Soyuz TMA-16M on March 27, 2015, and they remained on the station for Expeditions 43, 44, 45, and 46. The mission ended on March 1, 2016, with the departure of Soyuz TMA-18M from the station.

Kelly retired from NASA in 2016. His identical twin brother, Mark Kelly, is also a retired astronaut, and the junior U.S. senator from Arizona.

In addition to his musical projects, Scott, along with his bandmates in Neurosis, is co-owner of Neurot Recordings. Beginning in April 2011 he began hosting a monthly three hour streaming radio show on Scion A/V.com channel 5 called KMBT. He previously owned and operated an Internet radio station of his own called combatmusicradio.com that featured weekly shows from him as well as others such as Eugene S. Robinson, Joe Preston, and others.

Kelly also has worked extensively as a solo artist, releasing three albums and doing over 400 solo performances worldwide since the year 2000, including involving Neurosis bandmates in his The Road Home project. His most recent collaboration is an experimental noise project with Mike IX Williams, Sanford Parker, and Bruce Lamont. Corrections House will release a 7" record in early 2013 and began its experimentation on live audiences on January 21, 2013.

A native of the East Bay, Kelly resides with his wife Sarah and two youngest children in the woods of Southern Oregon.

Born in Madison, Florida, on September 20, 1927, Kelly was raised in Gadsden County and graduated from what became Gadsden County High School. Kelly played for the Florida Gators football team, before leaving the University of Florida to join the military. Kelly moved from Quincy to Lakeland in 1949, and four years later, was elected to the city commission. Kelly won two terms as mayor of Lakeland before unseating Republican state senator Harry King in 1956. Kelly left the state senate in 1963, and began campaigning for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, which he lost to Haydon Burns. In 1966, Kelly contested the nomination again, and finished third. Kelly ran in the Florida primary of the 1968 Democratic Party presidential primaries, placing third behind Senator George Smathers, who was running as a stand-in candidate for Vice President Hubert Humphrey, and Senator Eugene McCarthy. Kelly represented the unpledged delegates who did not want to be pledged to a candidate at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

He died at home in Lakeland of cancer on April 3, 2005, aged 77.
