Researching William Morgan

The allegations surrounding Morgan's disappearance and presumed death sparked a public outcry and inspired Thurlow Weed and others to harness the discontent by founding the new Anti-Masonic Party in opposition to President Andrew Jackson's Democrats. It ran a presidential candidate in 1832 but was nearly defunct by 1835.

William Frend De Morgan (16 November 1839 – 15 January 1917) was an English potter, tile designer and novelist. A lifelong friend of William Morris, he designed tiles, stained glass and furniture for Morris & Co. from 1863 to 1872. His tiles often recall medieval or Islamic design patterns. He applied innovative glazes and firing techniques. Galleons and fish were common motifs, as were "fantastical" birds and animals. Many of De Morgan's tiles were designed to create intricate patterns when several were laid together.

He was born in Stirling, Hastings County, Canada West in 1848, the son of John Dwyer Morgan who came to Upper Canada from Wales. He entered business as a merchant in Walsingham Centre, moving for a while to Port Rowan before returning. In 1882, he began manufacturing paints. Morgan served as reeve for Walsingham Township. He also commanded a militia battalion and was a member of the local Freemason lodge. Morgan was an agent for a telegraph company and served as postmaster.

Morgan was the son of Llewellyn Morgan of Ystradfellte. He was called to the bar. He purchased the estate of Dderw in Llyswen. He was a Recorder of Brecon from 1637, and was King's attorney in South Wales until his death.

In 1628, Morgan was elected a Member of Parliament for Monmouth Boroughs. He was later elected in April 1640 for Breconshire in the Short Parliament, re-elected for Breconshire for the Long Parliament in November 1640 and sat until his death in 1649. In February 1649, information was laid against him that he had supported the Royalist cause in the Civil War, raising money and arms for the king and sitting in the King's parliament in Oxford. Morgan died in 1649 and was buried in the Priory Church, Brecon.

Morgan married Elizabeth Morgan, daughter of Sir William Morgan of Tredegar. His son William was High Sheriff in 1655. He was the father-in-law of William Morgan (of Machen and Tredegar).

William Duane Morgan was born to a prominent family in Washington County, Pennsylvania. In 1837, he and his brother, Thomas Jefferson Morgan, owned and edited the Washington County Democratic newspaper Our Country.

In 1840 he moved to New Lisbon, Ohio, where he owned the Ohio Patriot. He was nominated at the state Democratic Party convention for Ohio State Auditor in 1851, and defeated his Free Soil Party and incumbent Whig opponents in the general election. He served a four-year term, but was defeated by Republican Francis Mastin Wright for re-election. He then owned the Newark Advocate in Newark, Ohio from 1856 to 1880. He died in 1887.

Born in Adams County, Illinois to John Milton Morgan and Mary (Gooding) Morgan, Morgan was educated in the country schools of Bourbon County, Kansas, later attending the Kansas Normal College at Fort Scott. In 1890, when twenty years of age, he set out to win a fortune in the far west. Making his way to Idaho, he located at Moscow in Latah County and secured employment on ranches in that vicinity. During the winter of 1890–91, he took up the study of law, and was admitted to the bar on October 9, 1894.

In the interim, he became a deputy sheriff of Latah County, serving in that position from 1 January 1893, until 1895, when he began practice. He served as a Democrat in the state legislature from 1897 to 1899, and in 1897 was also appointed private secretary to Henry Heitfeld, United States senator, and continued in that position for five years or until 1902, spending most of the period in Washington, D.C. While there, he pursued a course in the law department of Georgetown University, receiving an LL.M. in 1899.

Morgan's brother Albert was also an Idaho lawyer, and the brothers were law partners at various times. Although they were closely associated in their professional and social interests, they had opposite political views, Morgan being a Democrat and his brother being a staunch Republican.

Morgan served as mayor of Moscow from 1906–1908 and returned to the state legislature from 1911 to 1913, serving as the minority leader in the House. In 1914 he was elected to the Idaho Supreme Court, and by natural rotation became Chief Justice on January 1, 1919. Morgan resigned from the Idaho Supreme Court in 1920, returning to private practice. However, he defeated incumbent Justice Bertram S. Varian to return to the Idaho Supreme Court in 1933, and served until his death at age 72 in 1942.

Morgan grew up in Jacksonville and graduated with a bachelor's degree from Harvard University before serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After the war he returned to Harvard to study architecture. He studied in Italy on a Fulbright Scholarship (U.S.-Italy Fulbright Commission) and then returned to Jacksonville in 1961 to open his architecture practice in the city where he had grown up.

Morgan's five books cover the architecture of pre-industrial cultures, including those in pre-Columbian North America and Micronesia. He died in Jacksonville after a long illness on January 18, 2016, aged 85.

His debut single "I Met a Girl", reached number two on the Country Airplay chart and number eight on the Hot Country Songs chart in October 2016; the song was co-written with Sam Hunt. The album's second single "Missing", was released to country radio on November 7, 2016. His debut studio album Vinyl, was released on September 30, 2016. Morgan parted ways with Warner Bros. Nashville in January 2019.
