"BLAIN, BLANK. These surnames, current in the shires of Ayr and Wigtown, are reduced forms of MACBLAIN, q.v. Patrick Blane was provost of the burgh of Wigtown in 1561 (ER., xrx, p. 178), and John Blain had a charter of the naif of the ten-mark lands of Meikle-Wig in the parish of Whithorn in 1674 (Laing, 2728). Agnes Blain in the parish of Kirkcudbright, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. rx, p. 573). The name of BLAHAN, presbyter of Linton, East Lothian, who witnessed a charter by Robert, bishop of St. Andrews to the monks of St. Cuthbert at Coldingham (Chalmers, n, p. 541) is perhaps the same.
