"CRAIGIE. Of local or territorial origin from lands of the name in Ayrshire, West Lothian, Angus, and Perthshire. Johan de Cragyn of Linh'thgowshire rendered homage, 1296. His seal bears device of a winged griffin respecting, S' loh'is de Cragvli (Bain, n, p. 185, 200). Cragvli seems really to be = Craigielea, and Agnew says the property was carried by the heiress to Wallace of Riccarton. Brice de Cragy was burgess of Edinburgh, 1317 (SCM., v, p. 7), and John de Cragy was witness there, 1362 (Egiaii, p. 8). John de Cragy who obtained charter of the lands of Merchamstom (nowMerchiston),Edinburgh,in 1367 (RMS., i, 267) may be the John de Craigie who rendered homage to Robert m in 1371 (APS., i, p. 546b). Alexander de Cragy who was bailie of the Templelands of St. John, 1429 (Ayr, p. 83), and Alexander de Cragy who sold die lands of Orchardefelde in 1430 (RMS., n, 180) may be same person. Persons of this name early made their way to Orkney, where John de Krage appears as one of the prominent men in 1427 (Oppressions, p. 107), and Craigie of Gearsay were a family of long standing in the islands. Sir William A. Craigie, one of the editors-in-chief of the Oxford English dictionary is the best known of the name. Craggy 1700, Cragye 1488, Kraghe 1424. Cf. CRAICEN. 0 "(The surnames of Scotland.
