"MACGILL. Gaelic Mac an ghoiU, "son of the Lowlander or stranger" (gall). Macgill early became a surname in Galloway, and is now common in the district (M'Kerlie, i, p. 110). Maurice Macgeil witnessed a charter by Maldouen, earl of Leuenach to' the church of St. Thomas the Martyr in Arbroath, 1231 (RAA., i, p. 94). James M'Gile or M'Gill, burgess of Edinburgh, 1550 (Protocol, i), may be James M'Gill or Makgill of Rankelour-Nether, afterwards Clerk of Register, 1572 (Irvine, i, 69). Janet Mack Gil was charged with being a disorderly person (i.e. non-conforming) in the 0 parish of Cross-Michal, 1684 (RFC., 3. ser. DC, p. 574). There were Macgills in Jura in 1702, where they were known as Clann a ghoitt. Hugh MacGill there, who died c. 1845 550, was known as Eogtian Mac a ghotil. It is said that the name may in some cases be a curtailment of Mac Ghille mhaoU = Macmillan. Cf. MACCALL and M'IGHEILL. "(The surnames of Scotland. George Fraser Black, 1866-1948)
DNA
Sometimes you can run into a brick wall in your tree and you just don't have enough evidence to make that next step back in time. A DNA test can sometimes help to make a link to a particular family name if you find you share common DNA with people who have the same or similar surnames as each other. If you are lucky then you may get a match within a few generations and discover some Macgill ancestors.
