"MICHAEL. From the Hebrew personal name meaning 'who is like God.' It is synonymous with Miciah or Micah (Numbers xra, 13; I Chron. v, 13). Michael was first recorded bishop of Glasgow (Dowden, p. 294). Magister Michael witnessed a charter by William, bishop of St. Andrews before 1214 (Scon, p. 35), and Michael was abbot of Cambuskenneth in 1307 (Dowden, p. 201). This name is the source of MITCHELL and Gaelic MaceilleMichael. Part of Belady in Glenyleff was leased to Robert Mychael, 1476 ( (CuparAngtis, i, p. 223). See also ST. MICHAEL.
