Researching Andrew Taylor

Taylor was a successful junior footballer in the Footscray District League with Albion and won three 'best and fairest' awards. He appeared for Footscray at Under-19 level and broke into the seniors in the 1983 VFL season when he played a game against Geelong. It would however be the only time he played at VFL level for Footscray and he moved to South Australia where he spent a period of time with the Woodville Football Club.

He received another chance to play VFL football when he was picked up by the Brisbane Bears. In 1988 he received three Brownlow Medal votes for a 23-disposal effort against Carlton. The following season he was involved in an on-field incident with Danny Frawley for which the former Woodville player was suspended for three weeks for striking and another report of eye gouging was thrown out. He was a member of Brisbane's reserves premiership team in 1991, as a half forward flanker.

Upon leaving Brisbane, Taylor returned to the SANFL and signed up with Woodville-West Torrens. He topped their goal-kicking three times, with his best season tallies being 74 goals in 1993 and 61 goals in 1994. His performances in 1993 helped the club win the premiership and in 1994 he kicked a club record 12 goals in a game against North Adelaide. For his contributions up forward during their early years, Taylor was named as the centre-half-forward in the Woodville-West Torrens 'Team of the Decade'.

Taylor was born in Melbourne, Victoria, where he studied at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1985 to 1987, and graduated with a BFA. Some of his works belong to the collections of the Artbank, of the National Gallery of Victoria, of the Shepparton Art Gallery, and to "The Telstra Collection" of the Australian National University. Further works belong to private collections in Australia, in the United States and in France. Taylor has been married to Rachel Griffiths since 2002, with three children.

Taylor made a single first-class appearance for Surrey against the South in 1865 at The Oval. Surrey won the toss and elected to field first, with the South then making 196 all out, with Taylor taking the wicket of opening batsman Charles Payne to finish the innings with figures of 1/13 from ten overs. In their first-innings, Surrey were dismissed for 135, with Taylor being dismissed for a single run by George Bennett. The South responded in their second-innings by making 165 all out, setting Surrey a target of 227 for victory. Surrey reached 37/2 in their second-innings chase, at which point the match was declared a draw. This was his only major appearance for Surrey.

He died at Aston, Warwickshire, on 5 April 1901.

Taylor sailed the 1985–86 Whitbread Round the World Race on Lion New Zealand before joining New Zealand Challenge. He sailed on KZ 7 at the 1987 Louis Vuitton Cup and on KZ 1 during the 1988 America's Cup.

Taylor then sailed in the 1989–90 Whitbread Round the World Race on Fisher & Paykel NZ. He re-joined New Zealand Challenge for the 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup.

Taylor then joined Team New Zealand and was a grinder on board NZL 32 when they won the 1995 Louis Vuitton Cup and 1995 America's Cup. He then sailed in Team New Zealand's successful defence of the 2000 America's Cup. He was the only person to sail in every New Zealand America's Cup campaign to this point.

He joined the American OneWorld Challenge for the 2003 Louis Vuitton Cup. With Rohan Lord, he placed ninth in the 2004 Star World Championships, before joining Luna Rossa Challenge for the 2007 Louis Vuitton Cup.
