Researching Charles Lewis

Born in Plumstead, London, Lewis played for Eltham and then Maidstone United as a youth, before signing for Woolwich Arsenal in May 1907. A versatile forward, he was used by Arsenal in every attacking position, including striker and a Winger. Although he only made his Arsenal debut midway through his first season, against Sunderland on 28 December 1907, he finished the 1907-08 season as the club's second-top goalscorer, with eight, one behind Peter Kyle.

For the next two seasons Lewis featured regularly, playing the majority of Woolwich Arsenal's matches. However, at the time the club were struggling in the First Division, skirting relegation in 1909-10 (finishing 18th out of 20), before financial problems forced the club to sell its best players. Arsenal finished bottom of the First Division in 1912-13 having only scored 18 League goals; Lewis was Arsenal's top scorer that season, albeit with only four goals.

By now, Lewis mainly played as a supporting striker; this combined with Arsenal's poor attacking form meant he scored relatively few goals for the club. He faithfully stayed with the club (which in the meantime had moved to Highbury and renamed themselves "The Arsenal"), as they battled for promotion from the Second Division. The arrival of World War I robbed Lewis of the peak of his career; although he played in some wartime matches, by the time peace had broken out and Arsenal had returned to Division One in 1919, he was 33. He played in five League matches in 1919-20 before dropping down to the reserves.

Lewis left Arsenal in 1921, having played 220 times for the club, scoring 34 goals. He played for Margate before retiring. He died aged 80, in 1967.

He was previously an investigative producer for ABC News and the CBS news program 60 Minutes. He left 60 Minutes in 1989 and founded the Center for Public Integrity (CPI), a nonprofit news organization. In 1997, he led the creation of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which focuses on cross-border crime and corruption. CPI was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2014 for investigative reporting, with ICIJ winning 2017 in the category of explanatory reporting for the “Panama Papers” scandal.

As a bestselling author, Lewis has been called "a watchdog in the corridors of power" by the National Journal and "the godfather of nonprofit investigative journalism."

The Wall Street Journal said that "with the founding of the Center for Public Integrity in the 1980s... probably did more than anyone else to launch institutional nonprofit journalism in America."

He was a Ferris Professor at Princeton University in 2005, a Shorenstein Fellow at Harvard University in the spring of 2006, and is currently a tenured professor of journalism at American University in Washington, D.C. He is the author of the 2014 book is 935 Lies: The Future of Truth and the Decline of America’s Moral Integrity In 2018, he was awarded the I.F. Stone Medal for Journalistic Independence by Harvard's Nieman Foundation.

Born in Ottawa, Illinois, Lewis graduated from Oberlin College in 1876. He then studied law and was admitted to the Illinois bar in Chicago, Illinois in 1879. He practiced law in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and served as county attorney for Otter Tail County, Minnesota. In 1891, Lewis moved to Duluth, Minnesota and continued to practice law. In 1893, Lewis served as a Minnesota district court judge. Lewis served on the Minnesota Supreme Court from 1900 to 1912. He then moved to Los Angeles, California to practice law and died there in 1936.

Lewis was born in Geelong, Victoria, to Sarah Ann (née Osbourne) and Alfred James Moore Lewis. Living in Bendigo and Melbourne for periods, he worked at various times as a grocer's assistant, farrier, coach-builder, and tram conductor. In 1896, Lewis went to Western Australia, where he was initially employed in a foundry. He later found work with Western Australian Government Railways, and rose to the position of stationmaster. Lewis was prominent within the Amalgamated Society of Railway Employees, serving at various points as chairman of the Perth branch and secretary of the state branch. At the 1911 state election, he contested and won the seat of Canning for the Labor Party, defeating the sitting member, William Gordon. However, his time in parliament was short-lived, as he was defeated by the Liberal Party candidate, Robert Robinson, at the 1914 election. Lewis died in November 1935, aged 65, at which point he was living in Maylands. He had married Clara Hillier in 1902, with whom he had eight children.

Lewis was born at Liverpool, Medina County, Ohio, and attended the Michigan State Agricultural College. He was a volunteer soldier in the northern army during the Civil War.

He joined the staff of the Detroit Free Press in 1869, and became known as a writer of sketches under the pen-name of M. Quad. His accounts of the proceedings of a supposed society of colored people, to which he gave the name of Brother Gardner's Lime-Kiln Club, were very popular. His published works include: Sawed-Off Sketches (1884), Field, Fort and Fleet (1885), Under Fire (1886), and The Lime-Kiln Club (1887).

Charles Bertrand Lewis died at his home in Brooklyn on August 21, 1924.
