John Frederick Lewis

John Frederick Lewis (1804–1876) was an English Orientalist painter. He specialized in Oriental and Mediterranean scenes in detailed watercolour or oils, very often repeating the same composition in a version in each medium. He lived for several years in a traditional mansion in Cairo, and after his return to England in 1851 he specialized in highly detailed works showing both realistic genre scenes of Middle Eastern life and more idealized scenes in upper-class Egyptian interiors with little apparent Western influence.

His very careful and loving representation of Islamic architecture, furnishings, screens, and costumes set new standards of realism, which influenced other artists, including the leading French Orientalist painter Jean-Léon Gérôme in his later works. Unlike many other Orientalist painters who took a salacious interest in the women of the Middle East, he "never painted a nude", and his wife modelled for several of his harem scenes. These, with the rare examples by the classicist painter Lord Leighton, imagine "the harem as a place of almost English domesticity, ... [where] ... women's fully clothed respectability suggests a moral healthiness to go with their natural good looks".

Lewis' father, John, was a Welshman who immigrated to Canada and worked as a teacher and school principal. Lewis himself was born on Bay Street in Toronto, Ontario, a few yards from the future site of Toronto's Old City Hall. After attending Dufferin Public School, where his father was the first principal, and Toronto High School (now Jarvis Collegiate), he worked in a law office for a few years before getting a job with The Toronto World in 1881 and then worked for the Mail and Empire and the Winnipeg Tribune before returning to Toronto in 1883 and worked for the Globe for 19 years. During this time he worked in the press gallery in Ottawa for two years before taking on editorial duties at the paper. He also wrote a biography of Globe founder George Brown. John Lewis (headmaster)

John Elliot Lewis (born 23 February 1942) was the Head Master of Eton College from 1994 to 2002.

Born in New Zealand in 1942, Lewis attended King's School and King's College, Auckland. He gained a double first in Classics from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and taught at Eton between 1971 and 1980, holding the post of Master in College between 1975 and 1980. He was a distinguished rugby player and cricketer. From 1980 to 1994, Lewis was the Headmaster of Geelong Grammar School in Australia, which had been attended by The Prince of Wales and Rupert Murdoch.

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse found that Geelong Grammar School knew that boarding house assistant Philippe Trutmann, who worked at the school's Highton campus in the 1980s and 1990s, was accused of improper conduct in 1985 and failed to take any action. Phillippe Trutmann was convicted in 2005 of sexually abusing at least 40 male students and sentenced to six-and-a-half years' jail. The Royal Commission Counsel Assisting stated that "Mr Lewis' failures to take proper steps to respond to allegations of child sexual abuse and his failure to implement a proper system to deal with allegations of child sexual abuse fell below the standards expected of a principal of a school at the time of his actions."

Lewis took up the Headship of Eton College in 1994. Sir Eric Anderson, the previous head master, had led Eton College to second place in the league table of independent schools. Under Lewis, it dropped to 29th place. He supervised the education of Princes William and Harry.

Lewis retired in August 2002, having reached his 60th birthday.

John Delaware Lewis

John Delaware Lewis (1828 – 31 July 1884) was an English Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1868 to 1874.

Lewis was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the only son of an American merchant, John D. Lewis (1774-1841), and his wife Eliza Emma Clewlow (c1797-1829). She was daughter of James Hamilton Clewlow R.N, who was a purser and later secretary to Sir Samuel Hood. Lewis's father was one of the most successful merchants in St Petersburg, where he was based for about 30 years, trading in sugar, coffee, rice, cigars, duck, hemp, quills, oil and bale rope. He made various trips to Britain and died at his residence in Cornwall Terrace, Regent's Park, on the 17 May 1841.

Lewis lost his mother in the year following his birth in 1829; she died after giving birth to a daughter, Amy Eliza. His father died when he was twelve, and being so young there was no opportunity for him to become involved with the family mercantile business, which was taken over by the company secretary, Abraham van Sassen.

Lewis was educated at Eton College and at Trinity College, Cambridge graduating BA in 1850 and MA in 1853, was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1858 and went on the south-eastern circuit. He was a J.P. for Devon and Hampshire, and an officer in the Royal Pembroke Artillery Militia. He spent much time at Arcachon in France and was author of Sketches of Cantabs, Across the Atlantic, Causes Célèbres, and various other works in English and French. At the 1868 general election Lewis was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Devonport. He held the seat until his defeat at the 1874 general election, and unsuccessfully contested the seat again in 1880.

He married in 1868, Teresa Jervoise, daughter of Sir Jervoise Clarke-Jervoise, 2nd Baronet MP for South Hampshire, and died at Westbury House, Petersfield, Hampshire, at the age of 56. He was childless and left his estate to his wife (in her lifetime) and to his nephew, Herbert Leroy, who later changed his name to Herbert Leroy-Lewis. Leroy was the grandson of William D. Lewis, who was Lewis's uncle and had worked for his father in their Russian mercantile business.

Lewis's ancestors settled in the State of Delaware in the 17th century, his grandfather being Joel Lewis (1750-1820) of Christiana, New Castle County, Delaware. During the American War of Independence Joel Lewis raised a company at his own expense. However, he was also a Quaker and this action was in conflict with core beliefs of the Society. See article Quakers in the American Revolution.

From about 1860 until 1876 Lewis owned Membland Hall and estate, a distance of about 12 miles from his parliamentary constituency of Devonport. He eventually sold the property to Edward Baring, 1st Baron Revelstoke. Lewis was also the owner of the Lansdowne portrait of George Washington, now in the National Portrait Gallery (United States). The work was originally purchased by his father in 1827 and passed to Lewis's heir, Herman Leroy-Lewis.

John Lewis (Radnor MP)

John Lewis (1738–1797) was a British lawyer and politician who was elected to sit in the House of Commons three times between 1768 and 1780, but was each time unseated within a year.

Lewis was the eldest son of Henry Lewis of Bedford Row, London and his wife Elizabeth Gustaphin and was born on 14 October 1738. He was admitted at Lincolns Inn on 25 November 1755 and called to the bar in 1764. He married firstly Mary Colby, daughter of Captain Charles Colby, RN on 15 December 1761. In March 1763 he was appointed Receiver of the King’s revenues for Monmouthshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. He became Recorder of New Radnor in 1764 and bailiff in 1766. He succeeded his father on 18 January 1768 and was Recorder of New Radnor again in 1768. Lewis’s uncle Thomas Lewis, who had been MP for New Radnor for 46 years, wanted to return him as Member of Parliament for New Radnor but there were historical mistakes in the registration of freeman. At the 1768 general election Lewis was elected for Radnor, but was unseated on petition on 7 March 1769. At the 1774 general election the returning officer disallowed most of his opponent’s votes and returned Lewis, but he was again unseated on petition on 20 February 1775. His uncle Thomas Lewis died on 5 Apr. 1777 and Lewis succeeded to his estates at Harpton, near Radnor. His first wife had died in 1774 and he married as his second wife Ann Frankland, daughter of Sir Thomas Frankland, 5th Baronet on 24 March 1778. At Lewis's third parliamentary attempt in 1780 there was a double return and his opponent was successful. With his uncle now dead, he gave up and did not stand again. Lewis was bailiff again in 1786 and 1791 and was Recorder of New Radnor again in 1792. He was High Sheriff of Radnorshire in 1792-3. He died on 6 November 1797.
