Historical References
"BURNESS. This surname is said to occur in England in early times, but the Scottish Burness is most probably of local origin. Bumeshead, Cumberland, was the seat of a family of Bumes up to the reign of Edward i (Bum, Cumberland, London, 1777, i, p. 124). Bernes in the parish of Glenbervie before 1329 appears as Bernes and Bernis (RMS., i, App. n, 432, 585). The lands were perhaps Uiose afterwards known as Bumhouse of Kair in the barony of Mondynes and may be the present Bumside of Monboddo (cf. Jervise, i, p. 155). A family of the name of Bumes were leaseholders of the lands of Bralinmuir and Bogjordan which form the estate of Inchbreck in the early part of the sixteenth century (ibid.). A Bemys in the barony of Renfrew is mentioned in 1375 (RMS., i, 591) and Bemis in the shire of Dunbertane in 1495 (RMP., p. 405). David Bumis a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder, 1526 (RSS., i, 3386), and a later David Bumis was burgess of Ayr, 1587 (Ayr, p. 115). Robert Bums's right name was Bur ness (pron. Bur'ness not Bumess') but because the name was pronounced in Ayrshire as if written Bums, he and his brother Gilbert agreed to drop Bumess and assume Bums in April 1786 ( (WallaceChambers, i, p. 318). Burnace, Burnasse, Burnice. "(The surnames of Scotland. George Fraser Black, 1866-1948)
